La Concepción Reservoir
Being located on the Río Verde of Istán, it is also known as the Río Verde Reservoir supplying some 450,000 inhabitants of the Costa del Sol with drinking water.
It was built in 1971 and began reserving water in 1973, and currently belongs to the Andalucian Mediterranean Basin (Cuenca Mediterranea Andaluza - CMA) dependent on the Junta de Andalucia who manages its resources. To guarantee the supply of water to the Costa del Sol, the CMA wants to boost the growth of the La Concepción dam, located between Marbella and Istán, as on occasions it has had to open its floodgates with the wastage of water that this implies and subsequently in summer there have been problems in meeting the demands of this season.
This resource aims to resolve the water shortage problems in this area of high population density and tourist attraction.
