  • Approximate duration:  5 hours one way
  • Difficulty:  Very High
  • Maximum incline:  535m
  • Departure point:  Plaza de Istán (Istán Square)
  • Season:  Spring and autumn.  Winter depending on the rivers
  • Cartography:  National Topographical Map of Spain.  Page 1065 II – Istán.  Page 1065 IV - Marbella.  Scale 1:25.000
  • Recommendations: Camera.  When we reach the Holy Chestnut Tree we will then have a lovely souvenir of this hundred-year-old tree.

We will take the ISTÁN – PUERTO DE LA TROCHA route until this mountain pass and from here we will continue straight on along the track which descends slightly, until we cross a stream (30S-0322250 / UTM-4051826) at 20.200 metres from Istán.  Just as we cross we will see a deviation to the left that we must take.  Some 400 metres from here we will cross a bridge (30S-0321939 / UTM-4051910) over the HOYO DEL BOTE stream.  Once crossed, we take the left-hand track and begin to slowly climb upwards without paying attention to any of the secondary crossroads, i.e. the crossroads we do not mention here.

Some 27.500 metres from the start of the route we arrive at an intersection (30S-0322331 / UTM-4048322) with the track that goes from San Pedro Alcantará to the PUERTO DE LA REFRIEGA.  We take the right-hand track and continue ascending.  As a reference point we should see the ruins of a house which we will leave to our left, it is the old VENTA QUEMADA (burnt inn) house.

9 kilometres from this last intersection and at 36,5km of the total, we arrive at another secondary track, to the right (30S-0319496 / UTM-4054225) which we will take leaving the main track behind at this point.  Going down this track a few metres we will see a chain that we can easily get around with the bikes.  We continue descending and on the first pronounced left-hand bend we leave the track and take a path that descends along the small crest of a hill and after 200 metres we will come face to face with the immensity of  the HOLY CHESTNUT TREE (30S-0319767 / UTM-4054065) objective of this route and just recompense for the efforts made.

The return will be along the same path, or we can take the track which will take us to San Pedro Alcantará after descending approximately 14,5 kilometres and which, after crossing a bridge over the GUADAIZA river, will leave us on an asphalted road which forms part of the group of urbanisations through which we will look for the exit on to the road to Istán.  The return along this path will also be of 37 kilometres: 14,5 on trails and tracks and the rest on asphalt.
