Water Management Centre

Arroyo del BalatínIn Istán, the presence of water is constant; in its roads, fountains, countryside, irrigation channels, brooks, rivers, culminating in the Rio Verde reservoir, also known as La Concepción.

It appears that at the beginning of the 20th century, the importance of water in Istán was such that there were almost 20 mills to grind grain (wheat and corn). These mills used water as their source of energy. This leads us to believe that there existed an important agricultural, commercial and social presence.

Río VerdeThe Water Museum of Istán is an area, a space in which to remember the “Culture of Water” of Istán and its surroundings and at the same time, a place in which experimentation, play, observation, exposure and knowledge of the past, present and future of such a crucial element as “Water”.

The Centre in which we find ourselves is a mixed formula between a management centre, local museum and information centre for visitors.

  • As a management centre it analysis water as a common element to life and its development implications to humanity
  • As a local museum it looks at all aspects, forms and usage of water in Istán throughout time
  • As an information and visitors centre (CIAV), it offers tourist information at the local and provincial level
