Heraldry: Coat of Arms and Flag
The Town Council of Istán is conscious of the value of territorial symbols to delimit, link and identify the community they represent, and have therefore adopted a municipal flag and coat of arms in order to perpetuate the most relevant and characteristic facts about its history, as previously the town did not possess such a privileged emblem. To this end, the Town Council Plenum in extraordinary session of 24th of January 2002 agreed by an absolute majority to start proceedings for the adoption of a municipal flag and coat of arms, Decree 277/2003, of 30th of September, Bulletin nº201, of 20/10/2003.
The adoption of the municipal coat of arms is based on the historical past of Istán, as well as its toponoymy and the monuments it contains, the greater or lesser relevance of which is susceptible to symbolic representation by means of the extensive repertory of heraldic pieces and figures.
The etymology of Istán, which comes from the Arabic, means that which is between mountains, and therefore this is an apt element to form part of its heraldic emblem. To this we can add a second geographical element which is the Río Verde (Green River), which is represented within the heraldic system by silver and azure waves.
The third element taken into account, as a symbol of the Arabic culture which dominated these lands for so many centuries, is the crescent moon represented in silver.
Also worthy of note amongst the peculiarities of Istán are on the one hand, the existence of an eye-catching tree, the Castaño Santo (Holy Chestnut Tree), of thirteen and a half metres in perimeter and more than 800 years old; on the other hand, the remains of an Arabic tower which popular folklore maintains held Juana de Escalante captive in order that she might resist the Muslim troops that were laying siege to the town.
The Municipal Coat of Arms, therefore, can be described as follows: shield divided into two parts, the first, in an azure field, two silver mountains on silver and azure waves and, above, a crescent moon outlined in silver; the second, 1st in red tincture a ruined tower of silver and 2nd in silver a green oak. It is stamped with a golden royal crown.
The constitution of the Municipal Flag is inspired by the heraldic symbols of the town of Istán, within the great scope permitted by the science of vexillology. We can describe it as follows: rectangular cloth, of 2:3 proportions, divided into 3 horizontal stripes of the same width, the top one green, the bottom one red and the middle one white flecked with blue. In the centre it bears the stamp of the Istán coat of arms.
