Moorish Irrigation Ditches
They can be found throughout the entire town and they branch off to irrigate the different crop areas and terraces which surround same.
Of Muslim origin, the irrigation ditches were used to channel the water for irrigation and people’s domestic use. This construction represents a clear example of the level achieved by the Arab town in the canalisation of the waters for human use. The Arabs made skilful use of geographical accidents, building crop terraces where it seemed impossible to do so and ensuring water for their irrigation reached them by means of an ingenious track of irrigation ditches.
Water is the essential element of the Istán landscape and forms part of its very essence.
Currently, the irrigation ditches continue to serve for the canalisation of water for the traditional irrigation of crops, constituting a framework which runs along the subsoil of many streets in the town.
Worthy of note is the so-called “Acequia del Chorro” whose flow forms, from the source of the Río Molinos, a walk of incredible natural beauty.
