DEPARTURE:

Paseo del CotoWe leave from the Calvary, heading to the sports centre, half way up the hill we will find to the left the entrance to the “El Coto” recreation area (30S-0325957 / UTM-4050259) which we take and follow the stone path which runs along the side of the irrigation ditch, stopping to contemplate the pretty corners of this Mediterranean forest.

We follow the path to its end where it links with a tranche of track which leads up to an asphalted track, we turn to the left and this track leads us to another recreation zone: “the source of the Río Molino”.  Here we can take the opportunity to drink some water.  From here, we follow the forest trail and some 500 metres further up and on the right is a path (30S-0326376 / UTM-4050266) which rises up and takes us to another secondary track to the right which we must ignore, we follow the main track until its end.  Some 10 metres prior to the end of the track and to the right we re-take the old path (30S-0327040 / UTM-4050698) which continues rising up, a short while later we cross a ravine ARROYO DE LA VIEJA (30S-0327217 / UTM-4050834) and we continue up a little further.  Straight away we will see to our right a large rocky formation, EL TAJARILLO (598 metres), and we must follow the path at the base of this formation (30S-0327169 / UTM-4050994).

El Tajarillo desde el sendero de la Cañada del InfiernoWe pass along its base and from here the path begins to flatten out, passing by a terrace of olive trees and the end of a track) 30S-0327380 / UTM-4051404).  At this point we can rest and recuperate a little and enjoy the views, to the Northeast we can see the PLAZA DE ARMAS and behind it the southern slope of the TORRECILLA peak.  A little further ahead we will come to a fork.  Whichever track we take both will take us to the CIROLA pass, one path will do so by going up and providing us with views of the land and the other will do so a little further down.  If we reach the pass by the lower path we will have to then ascend some thirty metres to continue the path.

Ruta de senderismo Istán - Cañada del InfiernoA little to the east of this intersection we arrive at another ravine ARROYO CASTAÑO and then straight away we are at the CIROLA pass (30S-032192 / UTM-4051660).  From this pass we can see how the path continues in an easterly direction and we must take all necessary precautions as the path is extremely narrow.  In just a few minutes we will arrive at the CAÑADA DEL INFIERNO ravine (30S-0328700 / UTM-4051457).  Once at the ravine, it will be easy for us to find water a little lower down.  Finally, we descend some 500 metres into the ravine and arrive at the Istán-Monda track (30S-0328572 / UTM-4052254).  The return provides various options:  we can return by the same path or return on the left-hand path or a third option could be that a car collects us at this point to take us back to Istán.
