DEPARTURE:

El Picacho visto desde el PolideportivoWe depart from the Hotel Altos de Istán.  From this site, looking Southeast, up and a little to the left, we can see the characteristic shape of the PICACHO mountain peak, and the path which leads to it, snaking as it winds its way upwards.

Behind the hotel we will see a fenced water deposit, we will take the left path and after a few metres to the right we will find the start of the track (30S-0326227 / UTM-4049943) which zigzagging and always going upwards, will take us to a mountain pass (30S-0326585 / UTM-4049565) where we will see that this path continues on upwards and joins the Istán-La Concha route.

Istán desde El Picacho con Plaza Armas al fondoWe will turn left and within a few metres we reach the top of EL PICACHO (30S-0326571 / UTM-4049644), from where we will have a pretty view of both the hotel and the town of Istán, with the “Sierra Real” in the background (Plaza de Armas 1330 metres) and a little further back and to the right we can see EL TORRECILLA, the highest mountain peak in the province.  The descent will be via the same path.
