Every year as the Holy Thursday arrives, people from Istán performs the live Passion of Christ, "El Paso"; celebration that has been declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia and a Festival of Provincial Tourist Singularity in Málaga.

El Paso is a manifestation of great tradition and historical roots that has become one of the most important cultural and tourist events of the year in which "Panochos and Panochas" (people from Istán) have the real protagonism of this event because it counts with collaboration of more than a hundred people of all ages who, throughout the year, prepare and review the costumes, the sets, rehearse the texts and, of course, intervene in the final realization of the live performance.

The origins of El Paso date back to the seventeenth century, more specifically to the year 1666 when it began to be represented in "Plaza del Pueblo". It was then suspended a few years before the Spanish Civil War. This tradition was reinitiated in the year 1980.

El Paso will begin on Holy Thursday at 5:00 pm at the Municipal Sports Center, representing all the main events of Jesus life until the moment of his arrest.

On The Holy Friday, at 5 p.m. again and in the same place, the whole Passion of Christ will be performed until the Crucifixion, which will take place in a picturesque spot at the foot of the mountains.

And finally, on Holy Saturday at 9:00 p.m., El Paso will culminate its representation with the Resurrection of Christ.
